What is Case Pack?

A pre-packed unit containing multiple individual items, typically the minimum wholesale unit.

Quick Definition

A pre-packed unit containing multiple individual items, typically the minimum wholesale unit.

Case Pack Explained

A case pack is a pre-assembled unit of multiple individual products packaged together for wholesale distribution. It is the standard unit of measure in wholesale transactions — when a supplier says you can order "by the case," they mean one case pack. The number of individual items in a case pack varies by product and manufacturer, ranging from as few as 4 units for large items to 48 or more for small goods.

Case packs exist for operational efficiency. Manufacturers package products in cases at the end of their production line, making it the most cost-effective unit to ship and warehouse. Breaking cases (selling individual units from an opened case) adds labor cost and is typically a retail-level activity, not a wholesale one.

Understanding case pack quantities is critical for inventory planning. If a product comes in case packs of 12 and you only need 8 units, you still need to buy 12. This affects your inventory investment, storage requirements, and cash flow. Smart buyers factor case pack size into their purchasing decisions — a product with great margins but a 48-unit case pack requires significantly more capital than the same margin on a 6-unit case pack.

Case pack information is usually listed on wholesale price sheets and product catalogs. It may appear as "case qty," "units per case," "inner pack," or simply the quantity next to the wholesale price. Some products also have master cases (cases of cases) for pallet-level ordering.

Example in Wholesale Context

A hand soap brand sells in case packs of 12 bottles. If you want to stock 3 varieties, your minimum purchase is 36 bottles (3 cases x 12 bottles). At $4 wholesale per bottle, that is $144 in inventory investment. If the case pack were 48, the same 3-variety order would require 144 bottles and $576 — a very different commitment.

Case Pack FAQ

What is the difference between a case pack and a master case?

A case pack is the standard wholesale unit containing multiple individual products (e.g., 12 bottles of soap). A master case is a larger unit containing multiple case packs, used for pallet-level ordering (e.g., 4 case packs of 12, totaling 48 bottles). Most small to mid-sized retailers order by the case pack, while larger retailers and chains order by the master case.

Can you order less than one case pack?

Traditional wholesale suppliers require ordering in full case packs. However, some modern B2B platforms like Catalist offer the ability to order individual units or partial cases from certain brands. This flexibility is especially valuable for testing new products or maintaining variety in a smaller retail operation.

How do case pack sizes affect profitability?

Case pack size directly impacts your cash flow and inventory risk. Larger case packs require more upfront capital and create more risk if the product does not sell as expected. Smaller case packs allow you to test products with less investment and reorder more frequently based on actual demand. The ideal case pack size balances per-unit cost savings against inventory holding costs.
